‘Edinburgh is an extraordinary city with a unique blend of culture, sophistication and architecture.’ - Lonely Planet guide.
Winner of ten major ‘best city’ awards in the last six years, Edinburgh is one of the most elegant capital cities in Europe. It offers visitors a rich history, modern lifestyle and a glamorous backdrop for the largest cultural event on the planet – the Edinburgh International Festival.
The Edinburgh of the 21st century is a city of contrasts – ancient castles, cobbled wynds and church spires are complemented by its contemporary role as a thriving, influential centre for finance, business and education. Year round you’ll find a diverse and dynamic arts, theatre and music scene. As the first ever UNESCO City of Literature, and recently voted Literary Capital of the UK, Scotland’s proud capital has a fine and continuing tradition of writers from Scott, Conan Doyle and Stevenson to J K Rowling, Ian Rankin and Alexander McCall Smith.
Take an open-top bus tour to get your bearings… but the best way to appreciate Auld Reekie’s hidden magic is to explore on foot. Stroll down the mediaeval Royal Mile from Castle to Palace; climb Arthur’s Seat for dramatic views; browse the Old Town for fine Scottish cashmere, antiques or whisky; wander around the New Town for designer stores, art galleries and café society.
Above all it’s a truly sexy, sassy and sociable city. “Edinburgh”, said Robert Louis Stevenson, “is what Paris ought to be”. So we hope that this modern hotel guide – with the invaluable links below, too – helps you plan your stay in our city as valued and warmly-welcomed visit. Do let us know how you get on!

Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to Edinburgh during the summer months, to experience the Edinburgh Festival. There are in fact five major arts festivals, covering film, jazz, theatre, dance, music, books and visual arts as well as the Military Tattoo.
Throughout the summer, enjoy the café culture, pubs and wine bars with pavement tables, and the beautiful public gardens on Princes Street and St. Andrews Square. Visit the Botanical Gardens or take trip to Leith to tour the Royal Yacht Britannia. A major city attraction is Edinburgh Zoo, with a new multi million pound chimpanzee playground trail and superb penguin park. There is so much to see and do around town for all ages and interests.
Edinburgh is a serious cultural city for all tastes and interests. This summer brings a feast of inspiring art exhibitions. At the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, a celebration of Vanity Fair magazine with vintage and contemporary fashion and celebrity portraits; Tracey Emin, a 20 year retrospective of the award-winning British artist at the Gallery of Modern Art; and a major blockbuster show ‘Impressionism and Scotland’ with works by Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Van Gogh, et al, at the National Gallery. And James Bond comes to town this summer, with a centenary exhibition at the City Arts Centre about Ian Fleming and his famous hero in books and films!
